1st Semester 8-Week Sign Painting Course: Build the Foundation Behind Great Hand-Painted Signs
Hand-painted signs have a unique character that mass-produced graphics cannot easily replicate. The 1st Semester 8-Week Sign Painting Course from SMART ALEX SIGNS, led by Alex Kurakake, LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni and Hand-Painted Sign Artist, teaches essential traditional sign painting fundamentals, including lettering, brushwork, control, composition, consistency, and confidence—perfect for beginners or anyone looking to strengthen their skills.
LEARN THE VALUES OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SIGN PAINTING
Great hand-painted signs begin with strong fundamentals. The first semester focuses on lettering, layout, spacing, basic brush strokes, paper signs, and more, helping students understand the techniques behind creating well-designed hand-painted signs while building a foundation they can continue developing in future semesters.
Value # 1: Learn How to Draw Letters by Hand

Lettering is a key foundation of traditional sign painting. Students will work with multiple alphabets to develop an understanding of letter forms, proportions, spacing, consistency, and character relationships—essential skills for creating clean, balanced, and professional hand-painted lettering as they advance in sign painting.
Value # 2: Develop Basic Brush Stroke Techniques

A sign painter’s brush is essential to the craft. Students will learn basic brush strokes, movement, and control using Tempera Paint and Sable Brushes, which they must purchase after receiving the required materials list. With practice, students will build the brush control needed for more advanced sign-painting techniques.
Value # 3: Understand Layout Before You Paint

Students will learn why layout is essential to sign painting, including how lettering, spacing, proportions, and composition work together to create a balanced design. This helps students plan their projects before they begin painting.
Value # 4: Learn the Craft Through Paper Signs and Hands-On Practice

Traditional sign painting involves more than painting on a finished surface. Paper signs and practice exercises help students develop lettering, layouts, and brush techniques through hands-on repetition, building a strong foundation they can continue practicing beyond the classroom.
Value # 5: Build Skills That Continue Into the Next Semesters

The 1st Semester is a prerequisite for the 2nd Semester, with students able to progress toward the 3rd Semester. Each semester builds on previous skills and is priced individually, creating a progressive learning experience for students who want to develop a strong foundation in traditional sign painting.
Learn From a Sign Painting Artist With Industry Experience
Learning traditional sign painting goes beyond watching videos or reading about lettering techniques.
With Alex Kurakake, LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni and Hand-Painted Sign Artist, students can learn traditional hand-painted lettering through guided instruction and hands-on practice. The course gives students an opportunity to ask questions, practice techniques, develop their skills, and better understand the craftsmanship behind traditional hand-painted signs.
