learn the fundamentals of sign painting and rules to lettering and layout.
each week, students will build their skills starting from the absolute basics of drawing letterforms, to creating a custom, hand-painted sign.
homework will be assigned throughout the week to assist in understanding the lessons taught during the class.
no prior experience required.

for the absolute beginner or anyone interested in exploring the craft of sign painting! this class has been specifically created to walk students through the general process of creating a hand painted sign from scratch.
students will paint their own sign using a provided design by the instructor and will learn about the tools necessary to complete the project.
no drawing is required for this class, which allows for more time on the brush.
all materials provided
7 hrs each day including lunch (not provided).
3-day hand lettering & layout

21 HOUR CLASS @ $450.00

an intensive 3-days of hands on lettering and layout with pencil and eraser only!
no painting will be done in this class.
students will learn the rules of basic lettering and advance into drawing multiple alphabets by the end of the third day. we will also focus on layout each day and how to design an effective sign with skillful lettering.
3-day hand-lettering & brush basics workshop

for beginners, hobbyists or anybody interested in the craft.
8:00am-2:30pm with a 45-min lunch break. lunch not provided.
a fridge is available for anybody who’d like to bring their own lunch.

water gilding workshop with alex kurakake

Learn the basic and proper way to water gild with genuine gold leaf.
Learn the traditional way to water gild with genuine gold leaf. Not for the absolute beginner, some brush skills are required. Students will participate in creating a two-toned water-gilded sign using traditional methods by hand.
All materials will be supplied by the instructors for class use.

paint and age a custom one-of-a-kind "antique" sign with alex kurakake
hand-painted sign artist / instructor from smart alex signs orange county
I will have a handful of designs to choose from and will go over many different techniques for creating a faux antique sign. This class is a lot of fun and very forgiving if you are worried about your skill level. No drawing or prior skills necessary.
For beginners to advanced,
