FOR THE ABSOLUTE BEGINNER OR ANYONE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THE CRAFT OF SIGN PAINTING!
This class has been SPECIFICALLY CREATED TO WALK STUDENTS THROUGH THE GENERAL PROCESS OF CREATING A HAND PAINTING SIGN FROM SCRATCH.
STUDENTS WILL PAINT THEIR OWN SIGN USING A PROVIDED DESIGN BY THE INSTRUCTOR and WILL LEARN ABOUT THE TOOLS NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT.
No drawing is required for this class, which allows for more time on the brush.
All materials provided. 7 hrs each day including lunch (not provided).

Learn the BASICS OF THE BRUSH, THE RULES TO LETTERING & LAYOUT, MULTIPLE ALPHABETS, EFFECTS LIKE CONVEX/BEVELED LETTERS, BLENDING & FAUX MARBLE, and MUCH MORE.
Students will build their skills each week and will complete the course with their own custom hand painted sign using all the skills acquired.
Some homework will be assigned throughout the week
all materials will be provided for the class.
We will take a 45 min break to eat lunch. fridge available.

DAY 1
LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LETTERING, HOW TO SCALE YOUR LETTERS, LETTER SPACING, AND THE RULES TO LAYOUT.
DAY 2
LEARN THE MATERIALS AND PROCESS FOR PREPPING OR PAINTING SIGNS. BEGIN DRAWING FULL SIZE LAYOUTS FOR CLASS ASSIGNMENT. PRACTICE BASIC BRUSHSTROKES WITH 1 SHOT OF LETTERING ENAMEL.
DAY 3
HAND-PAINT A SIGN AND LEARN THE TRICKS OF THE TRADE.

learn the basic and proper way to water gild with genuine gold leaf.
water gilding class workshop students will participate in creating a two-toned water-gilded sign using traditional methods by hand. all materials will be supplied by the instructors for class use. bring a notebook, pen and pack your own lunch.

paint and age a custom one-of-a-kind "antique" sign with alex kurakake
hand-painted sign artist / instructor from smart alex signs orange county
I will have a handful of designs to choose from and will go over many different techniques for creating a faux antique sign. This class is a lot of fun and very forgiving if you are worried about your skill level. No drawing or prior skills necessary.
For beginners to advanced, 9am-1pm pst in person.

layout class will focus on designing different types of signs with a pencil and paper through zoom.
each class, a different set of copy will be given and students will engage in creating their own version of that sign within the allotted time. tips and critiques will be given by the instructor during and after design has been completed.
please have a sharp pencil, eraser, (2) blank 8 1/2 x 11 paper and a ruler.
